Just when the elves thought the summer couldn’t get sweeter, the workshop kitchens have cracked open a fresh batch of nutty holiday cheer. Meet our fifth cookie in the 12-part series: the Nutcracker Nougat Crunchers — a crunchy, chewy delight that combines toasted walnuts, creamy nougat, and a drizzle of spiced caramel.

Originally crafted for the annual “Nuts for Christmas” Festival held every August in Santa’s Courtyard, these cookies were a tribute to the North Pole’s most dapper holiday icons: the nutcrackers. And just like the soldiers themselves, these treats are bold, balanced, and full of character.

Cookie Spotlight: Nutcracker Nougat Crunchers

Elf Origin:
These were created by none other than Major Maplewalnut, a retired toy soldier turned pastry perfectionist. After years in the Nutcracker Brigade, he returned to the kitchen to honor his regiment with a dessert that snaps with pride.

Elf Commentary (Hazel Nuttlebatch): “One bite and I salute! The toasted walnut crunch with that gooey nougat middle? It’s a parade in my mouth!”

Recipe: Nutcracker Nougat Crunchers

Yields: ~24 cookies
Prep Time: 30 minutes
Chill Time: 1 hour
Bake Time: 12 minutes

Ingredients:

  • ½ cup unsalted butter, softened
  • ¾ cup brown sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • ½ tsp baking soda
  • ¼ tsp cinnamon
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • 1 cup toasted chopped walnuts
  • ½ cup nougat (cut into small cubes or use mini marshmallows)
  • Optional: caramel sauce for drizzling

Instructions:

  1. Prepare Nougat: If using traditional nougat, chop into small cube-sized pieces and freeze for 15 minutes to prevent melting too fast during baking.
  2. Mix the Dough: Cream butter and sugar together until light and fluffy. Beat in egg and vanilla. In a separate bowl, whisk flour, baking soda, cinnamon, and salt. Slowly add dry ingredients to wet mixture.
  3. Fold & Chill: Stir in chopped walnuts and nougat chunks. Cover dough and chill for 1 hour to allow flavors to set.
  4. Bake the Cookies: Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Scoop dough onto parchment-lined baking sheets. Bake for 10–12 minutes or until edges are golden.
  5. Add the Finish: Once cooled, drizzle cookies lightly with caramel sauce for a festive touch.

Elf Tip:

For an added holiday flair, sprinkle crushed nut brittle over the caramel before it sets!
